Smart buoys a beacon for collaboration

The installation of the first telemetered smart buoy in the Menindee Weir pool offered a timely opportunity to connect with community about water quality monitoring and the Darling-Baaka river system.

The Darling-Baaka River Health project team met three Barkandji Rangers to inspect the buoy in October 2023 to run through taking water quality profiles with the EXO sonde, and observe hydro-surveying in the first of ongoing opportunities to collaborate together out on the water.

Senior Scientist Angus Ferguson led an extensive discussion about water quality measurement, and the Barkandji Rangers shared their knowledge of the river and living on the local waterways.

When the smart buoy dashboard went live in December 2023, the River-Health Project team and the EPA visited Barkandji Rangers and a small gathering of community members at their Menindee Hub to walk through the online tool as part of broader discussions for the Flood Recovery Program’s activity.
